School Bus Related Standards and Inspections
In 1971 the Minnesota State Patrol was mandated to perform school bus inspections on every registered school bus in the state. Inspections are performed annually, by seven teams of inspectors. They inspect about 14,000 buses. There are approximately 20,000 endorsed school bus drivers. The drivers are required to have a physical every two years, a criminal background check every four years, and urine and breathalyzer tests are performed at random.
October 21,2008 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration enacted a final rule requiring lap / shoulder belts for small school buses, effective on all buses (10,000 pounds or less) manufactured after October 21, 2011. They are hoping this will provide optimum protection for the students being transported in a school bus.
